I don't like to push books on people, but there is one book that I recently picked up that I highly recommend to all Americans. It's called The Pocket Book of Patriotism by Jonathan Foreman . It is filled with American Historical facts, American heroes, quotations, timelines, speeches, poems, songs, voyages and anything else American you could imagine. This book should be on the bookshelf in every American home to be savored and shared.

Within it is "What is Patriotism?". I ask myself this question daily so that I can do at least one thing every day to show my patriotism and look inside myself to be certain I am what I say I am.

pa-tri-ot-ism n love for and devotion to ones country

"Americanism means the virtues of courage, honor, truth, sincerity and hardihood-the things that made America. The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living, and the get-rich-quick theory of life." ~Theodoare Roosevelt

"One cannot be an American by going about saying one is an American. It is necesary to feel America, like America, love America and then work"~Georgia O'Keefe

"The patriots are those who love America enough to see her as a model for all mankind."~Adlai Stevenson

"True patriotism springs from a belief in the dignity of the individual, freedom and equality not only for Americans but for all people on earth."~Eleanor Roosevelt

Are you truly a patriot? How deep is your love for America and what it represents? When I read quotes like those above, I get chills down my spine and I hold my head a little higher than before I read them. I am a patriot.

"The name of AMERICAN, which belongs to you, in your national capacity, must always axalt the just pride of Patriotism."~George Washington

Lastly, "Freedom is a fragile thing and is never more than one generation away from extinction. It is not ours by inheritance; it must be fought for and defended constantly by each generation, for it comes only once to a people."~Ronald Reagan

Very nice blog!

I did a similar post about patriotism and how glad I am to live where I do.

Still get teary-eyed every time I sing/hear the National Anthem!

Patriotism can be used as good like the National Anthem or the pledge, but has been used by dictators like Adolf Hitler and Joesph Stalin to invade countries and impose mass genocide against millions of people. using patriotism for war is using it for terror.

Using patriotism for war? Perhaps you have forgotten about 9/11!! Remember? When war was declared on the U.S.? We are defending America and fighting the global war on terror. Patriotism is standing by America…recite the words of the National Anthem and remember 9/11. Do this and you will understand.

United we stand!

People like Josh equate our brand of patriotism for warmongering. They cannot understand that pacifism does not equate to bringing about peace in the world. And his comparison of "oh let's put ourselves in their shoes and try and understand them better" reasoning of Hitler and Stalin is just moral relativism that cannot distinguish the difference between good and evil.

Another great post! I signed up for your RSS feeds. Keep on writing about America. More people need to hear about patriotism. That's the purpose of my blog.
